No Brakes in Oadby: Wet Belt Failure, Blocked Sump, and a Vacuum Pump Replacement

This one was towed to our Leicester garage from Oadby with a terrifying symptom: the driver had suddenly lost their brakes. The pedal feel was wrong, and braking assistance had dropped off, so it wasn’t something to ignore or “see how it goes”.

What we found

We know that symptoms like this are often just the tip of the iceberg. Upon inspection, we traced the cause back to a notorious culprit in modern engines: the wet belt failure.

The Domino Effect

The “wet belt” (timing belt running in oil) had deteriorated. As the belt stripped, rubber debris fell into the engine oil, clogging the sump and blocking the oil pickup strainer. Starved of oil and clogged with debris, the vacuum pump (which powers the brake servo) failed, leading to the loss of braking power.

The Rescue Mission – Saving this engine required a major intervention:

  1. The strip down: we removed the front of the vehicle and stripped the engine down to access the core components.
  2. The cleanup: we dropped the sump to physically clean out the rubber debris that was blocking the oil flow.
  3. The replacement: we installed a brand new wet belt kit and cover, a new vacuum pump to restore the brakes, and a new auxiliary belt.
  4. Fresh Life: Finally, a complete oil and filter change to ensure the engine runs clean.

Back to Safe, predictable braking

Once everything was back together, we rechecked the system, confirmed correct operation, and got the vehicle back to stable braking, proper assistance, and no nasty surprises.

These are the jobs where a “small” belt issue turns into something much bigger, and it’s why we’re big on clear diagnostics and doing the full job in one go. It’s also why so many local drivers have left us Google reviews; it’s as simple as that – they want the problem explained properly and fixed properly.
