Cracked and Perished: Wet Belt Replacement on a Citroen C1

The failure of timing components usually comes with no warning signs before it occurs, but when they do fail, it results in major system damage. This Citroen C1 arrived at our Leicester workshop all the way down from Glenfield, for a wet belt replacement after the owner noticed unusual engine noise and a drop in performance.

The Diagnosis

The inspection of the belt after cover removal revealed the source of the problem. The wet timing belt displayed signs of ageing through its cracked and deteriorating rubber surface. A wet belt operates inside the engine, where it runs through oil at all times. The design minimises friction and noise, but it causes the belt material to deteriorate because it faces continuous heat exposure and oil contact, as well as pressure stress.

Over time, the rubber begins to soften and shed particles into the oil system. The accumulation of debris could block the oil pickup strainer, which could lead to decreased oil pressure and damage critical engine parts, including camshafts, oil pumps and crankshaft bearings.

On this C1, the belt hadn’t yet disintegrated, which meant the owner acted just in time.

The Work

We began by stripping down the front of the engine to access the timing system. The complete extent of wear became apparent after the belt was opened because the old belt showed brittleness and surface separation of its fragments.

The sump and oil pickup were then removed and thoroughly cleaned to eliminate any residue that could circulate through the engine. With everything spotless, we installed a new OEM wet belt kit, including a replacement tensioner and guide pulleys.

Our mechanics followed factory-defined timing procedures using specialised locking tools, which set correct valve and piston alignment.

We installed a new oil filter before closing everything back and adding high-quality oil that meets the needs of wet belt engines. This helps extend belt life and maintain stable lubrication under high temperature conditions.

The Result

Once reassembled, the Citroen C1 fired up instantly and ran quietly, with no rattling, no slipping, just smooth operation. We performed a full diagnostic scan, verified oil pressure, and road-tested the vehicle to confirm performance and reliability.

The owner was relieved to have caught the issue early, avoiding the expensive repair that usually follows a snapped or deteriorated wet belt.

Prevention Matters

Wet belts often deteriorate silently, and many drivers only find out about the problem after an engine failure. That’s why we always recommend following the manufacturer’s replacement schedule and paying attention to early warning signs such as:

  • A light ticking or rattling noise from the engine
  • Sluggish acceleration or uneven idle
  • Metallic debris or rubber particles in the oil filter

Replacing the belt early costs far less than rebuilding or replacing an engine later.

Back on the Road

With the new belt in place, this Citroen C1 is now back to reliable daily driving. Jobs like this highlight why preventative maintenance matters and why so many Leicester drivers trust The Motor Company to spot problems early and fix them properly.
