Brake Trouble Traced to a Wet Belt Failure on a Ford Ranger from Evington
This Ford Ranger came into our Leicester garage from Evington with a serious problem: the driver reported that the vehicle had lost braking assistance. The pedal feel had changed significantly, making it clear that something in the braking support system wasn’t working as it should.
When a pickup like this arrives with braking concerns, the first priority is to identify the root cause quickly and safely.
Finding the Cause
After initial checks, we traced the issue back to a failed wet belt inside the engine. On engines that use this design, the timing belt runs through engine oil rather than being fully dry.
Over time, the belt material can start to break down and shed rubber debris. When that debris circulates through the oil system, it often ends up collecting in the sump strainer, restricting oil flow.
In this case, the deterioration had gone far enough that the sump was partially blocked, and the failure had also affected the vacuum pump responsible for providing brake assistance.
The Work Carried Out
To put things right, we carried out a full strip-down and completed the following repairs:
- Replaced the wet belt kit and cover
- Removed and cleaned the sump, clearing out belt debris
- Replaced the vacuum pump
- Installed a new auxiliary belt
- Completed an oil and filter change
Cleaning the sump thoroughly was a key part of the job. Any leftover belt debris can circulate through the engine and create further problems if it isn’t removed completely.
Back to Proper Braking
Once everything was rebuilt and tested, the Ranger was back to delivering stable braking assistance and smooth engine operation.
Wet belt deterioration can develop quietly, often without obvious warning signs until other systems begin to suffer. Jobs like this highlight why proper diagnosis and a thorough repair process matter.
At The Motor Company, we see these types of failures regularly on modern Ford diesel engines. It’s also one of the reasons local drivers trust our garage and continue leaving positive reviews after we’ve helped get their vehicles back on the road.
