Back on Point: Steering Rack Replacement on a Ford Focus 1.0 (2014)
The Problem
The owner of this 2014 Ford Focus 1.0 petrol was looking for a garage and came to us from Oadby, Leicester with a clear complaint: the steering had gone vague and a bit “notchy”, especially when parking. Out on the ring road, it needed constant little corrections to keep it straight. No warning lights, but the confidence just wasn’t there.
A road test confirmed the feel from the wheel didn’t match what the tyres were doing. Upon the lift, play checks and a closer look around the gaiters pointed to wear inside the steering rack. On a Focus, a tired rack takes the car from tidy and precise to wandering and unsettled. Time to sort it properly.
The Repair
We fitted a brand-new rack and carefully inspected the track-rod ends and fixings, replacing any hardware that had seen better days. With the new unit in, we set the toe accurately and carried out a full alignment so the car would track arrow-straight again. This is the kind of job we do week in, week out within our steering & suspension repairs, the difference on the road comes from the setup, not just the parts.
Before handing the keys back, we rechecked torque settings, confirmed there were no noises at full lock, and performed a steering angle calibration so assistance and straight-ahead feel lined up perfectly.
The Result
The difference was immediate. The wheel returned to centre cleanly, low-speed manoeuvres were smooth, and at a steady cruise, the driver no longer had to “chase” the lane. Braking felt more composed too, simply because the front end was pointing exactly where it should.
Jobs like this are a good reminder: if the steering feels off – loose, notchy, or vague – it’s worth getting it checked before tyres wear unevenly or confidence slips further.
